Prepare the Garage for Moving

Moving is no one’s idea of a good time. However, it doesn’t have to be quite as much of a hassle as many make it out to be, so long as you are willing to take the time to prepared and get things ready early. A good plan can go a long way in helping to make the move a lot more bearable. For example, what is the last room that most people pack and move? Quite often, it ends up being the garage. What if you were to get the garage in order first? It could help to make the rest of the move easier.

Moving

If you are going to be moving soon, be sure to check out the tips below that can help to make your move easier.

Sort Your Items

The first thing you should do is go through the garage and sort your items into four groups. This is very important if you happen to store a lot of items in the garage and use it for more than just parking your vehicle.

The first group will be items that you are planning to keep and bring along with you to the new house. Think carefully though, and make sure they are worth keeping.

The second group will be for the items that you would like to sell. You could choose to have a garage sale, or you might find that you prefer to sell some of the items online, where you might be able to get a better price for them. The third group will be for items that you can give away to someone who might want them, or that you could give to charity.

In the fourth group will be all the items that have no value and that no one else would want. Essentially, this is the trash, and you will simply dispose of the items in this group.

Have Moving Materials

Nothing derails packing and getting items ready for a move faster than realizing that you do not have all the moving materials you need. You will need to have plenty of cardboard boxes of the correct size, along with materials such as newspapers or bubble wrap to protect fragile items. You should also have plenty of moving tape, along with a marker to label the boxes as they are packed.

What About Items You Can’t Wrap?

In some cases, some items can’t be wrapped, and they can’t be moved on a moving truck. If you have any engines that have gas in them, such as your lawnmower, you will need to remove the gas before it can be moved. Other items might be too dangerous to put on a moving truck, such as flammable materials and paint cans, or propane tanks. Instead, you will want to get in touch with a recycling center to learn how to dispose of them properly.

Care with Wrapping and Packing

You want to make sure you are wrapping your items properly to protect them. Similar items can go together, and you can use bubble wrap to keep fragile items safe. You can also use the bubble wrap on sharp objects, so no one is injured during the move. If you have saved the original packaging for any of your items, use it for the move.

Another important tip is to make sure that the boxes you are packing are still capable of being lifted and move. A common mistake is to overpack boxes, particularly those with books, making them extremely difficult to move.

Always Label

If you take the time to label each of the boxes as you start to pack your garage, and the other rooms of your house, you will find that it is much easier to sort everything out once you get to the new place. You can also mark certain boxes for different rooms and label them as fragile.

Make sure you start to pack as early as possible before you move. A couple of months in advance is a good idea. It will help to reduce your stress. If you take care of the garage first, you will also have all that extra space to put the boxes from the house as you pack them, so they do not get in the way.
