Easy Ways to Reduce Garage Door Noise

Garage door and garage door opener

Does your garage door make noise? If the noises tend to be relatively small, you might not have even noticed them. Even if they are a bit more problematic, there is a tendency for people to simply ignore them. Eventually, the problem fades into the “background noise” and it doesn’t bother them. However, even if you don’t think the noise in your garage door is a problem, it could be a sign of problems to come. When the noise is loud, then you certainly want to take action as soon as possible. Lucky for you, we’ve included some simple tips that you can use to help keep the noise under control.

The Metal Parts Need to Have Proper Lubrication

If you want to make sure that your garage door system lasts as long as possible, and that it remains quiet, you are going to need to be sure that you have it lubricated properly. When the door was installed, it would have had plenty of lubrication to last for around a year, or even up to 15 months in some cases. However, you are eventually going to need to replace that lubricant.

While you might think that any type of lubrication would work, that is simply not the case. You do not want to use automobile grease because it will cause the door to slide rather than roll on the tracks. You also do not want to use WD‑40, as this is actually a degreaser. Instead, you will want to use motor oil. The oil that you might use for your car or lawnmower should work just fine for you.

You will want to apply the oil to the hinges, rollers and lift springs. However, you don’t want to just slather the area in oil. Instead, you are going to want to make sure that you work in moderation. Use a cloth to apply it and be sure that you remember to wipe away any excess oil. If you don’t, it is going to end up dripping on the floor or on your vehicle when the door is open. You should remember to take care of this lubrication process two times per year – before and after winter.

When it comes to lubricating, you will also want to make sure that you are lubricating external frame weatherstripping. For this, though, you are going to want to utilize a silicone based lubricant. Good garage door installers are going to be able to provide you with 2 types of lubricants for your garage door.

Tighten Things Up

After you have taken the time to lubricate everything to help reduce the noise, you will want to consider whether the bolts and screws in the system are fully tightened. Over time, these can start to get loose. After all, there are a number of moving parts in the system, and this can cause the hinge screws, the bolts, and other components to start to become loose. You will want to take some time to check all of the bolts and the screws in your garage door and see if they need to be tightened. If they are loose, it will cause a rattling sound. You do not want to wait to take care of this problem, as they could continue to get looser.

Consider Changing Out the Rollers

One of the other elements that you are going to want to check when you have a noisy garage door is the rollers. The metal rollers are often a source of noise, even though you might not always realize it. You are going to want to check the steel rods that hold the rollers. Are they attached properly? Do they roll like they should or do they slide? If there are no problems, then the lubrication should be all that you need.

However, if the metal rollers are simply not working out for you, you might want to consider getting nylon rollers instead. There are two different kinds that you can choose:

  • Black nylon rollers without ball bearings
  • 11‑ball bearing steel rollers covered in white nylon

If you have a 9' x 7' door, the black will work well for you. If you have a 16' double garage door, the white rollers are a good option instead.

Check the Electric Garage Door Opener

If the opener has problems, such as components that have not been adjusted properly, it is going to cause some noise to be sure. If you have a door that is less than seven years old, you will find that you probably don’t have to do much maintenance at all. You probably won’t need to have lubrication, and the only thing that you might need to do is go through and tighten up some of the components. You can refer to the manufacturer’s guide for help.

However, those who have doors that are older than seven years old are going to need to do more work. In some cases, this might need getting an entirely new garage door system. That is certainly true when it comes to doors that are 15 year old or greater. They are no longer as safe as they should be, and they do not have all of the wonderful technological advances that have been added to these systems over the course of the last few years.

If you do need to get one of these new systems, and perhaps a new door, you are going to want to check for a ½ HP model, and be sure that it has a one‑piece track and a metal‑reinforced rubber belt drive. You will want to get in touch with a garage door professional who will be able to provide you with a quotation.
