Is insulating a non-insulated garage door worth the hassle?

If you’ve recently renovated your garage and added insulation to the walls and ceilings, you might be wondering whether you should also insulate your non‑insulatedgarage door or whether to just invest in a new garage door.

Insulated Garage Door

If you choose to insulate a non‑insulated garage door there are two types of insulation you can use:

  • Mineral wool blankets, which you can buy from any renovation or construction store. They come in a kit that includes flexible mineral wool rolls with a plastic reflective film. Insulating the interior of your garage door with mineral wool blankets will cost somewhere in the region of $75‑$100.
  • Polystyrene insulating panels. You’ll find these in large chain hardware stores. They come in a kit including insulation panels made for single garage doors. Don’t forget, polystyrene panels are flammable and they must be covered with another material to prevent fires.

You CAN insulate a non‑insulated garage door, BUT…

Even if you do insulate the interior side of the garage door, the cold will penetrate into the garage. This is because there is no thermal break between the interior and exterior garage door sections. Your investment certainly won’t improve your level of insulation to an R5 or R6 level.

So why bother?

You won’t really increase your level of thermal insulation, but a mineral wool covering will reduce the metallic sounds you hear when your non‑insulated garage door opens and closes.

Warning!

Whatever you do, DO NOTtry to insulate your non‑insulated garage door with anything other than the two materials mentioned above, doing so could add extra weight to your garage door, and throw it off balance. Your garage door spring system is calibrated to counterbalance the weight of the garage door. If you add more weight, your spring system will need recalibrating to reflect the new weight of the garage door.

Is it worth the hassle?

We’d love to say yes, but no, it’s not. If you’re looking for an insulated garage door, you really need to consider changing your garage door for a well‑insulated one with a high‑level of thermal protection.
